It was subsequently recognised as a state private university in Gujarat, enabling it to confer its own degrees in public health and allied disciplines.
IIPHG offers postgraduate, doctoral and short-term programmes oriented towards public health practice. Areas of academic and research focus typically include epidemiology, health systems and policy, health economics, health management, environmental and occupational health, and maternal and child health.
The institute undertakes applied research, training of health professionals, and technical support to government health programmes in Gujarat and other states. Its work spans collaborations with state health departments, central ministries, and international development partners.
As a specialised public health university in western India, IIPHG contributes to building a trained workforce in public health, an area historically served largely by medical colleges and government training institutions. It supplements traditional medical education by focusing on population-level health challenges and health systems strengthening.
