IIIT Pune is part of a network of Indian Institutes of Information Technology set up across the country to expand high-quality technical education in information technology. The PPP-model IIITs are jointly funded by the Central Government, the respective State Government, and industry partners, with the Central Government bearing the largest share of the capital cost. These institutes were brought under a unified statutory framework through the Indian Institutes of Information Technology (Public-Private Partnership) Act, 2017, which declared them as Institutes of National Importance and empowered them to grant degrees.
The institute offers undergraduate Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) programmes, with a primary emphasis on Computer Science and Engineering and Electronics and Communication Engineering. Admissions to the B.Tech programmes are conducted through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main), with seat allocation handled centrally through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA). The institute also undertakes research and postgraduate work in areas linked to information technology, such as data science, artificial intelligence, communications, and embedded systems.
As an institute under the IIIT (PPP) Act, IIIT Pune is governed by a Board of Governors that includes representatives of the Government of India, the Government of Maharashtra, and industry partners, alongside academic members. The Director serves as the principal academic and executive officer.
IIIT Pune contributes to India's strategy of developing specialised institutions for information technology education, complementing the broader Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs). Its location in Pune, a major centre of the Indian information technology and engineering services industry, places it within an active ecosystem of software companies, research and development centres, and other engineering institutions.
