The Indian Institutes of Information Technology were conceived as a network of specialised institutes intended to address the country's growing demand for skilled professionals in information technology and related fields. Under the PPP scheme announced by the Government of India, each institute is jointly funded by the central government, the host state government, and industry partners, with the central government contributing the majority share. IIIT Guwahati was established within this framework to serve the North-East region of India and to expand access to high-quality technical education in the region.
The IIITs established under the PPP model were brought under a common statutory framework through the Indian Institutes of Information Technology (Public-Private Partnership) Act, which conferred on them the status of Institutes of National Importance and the authority to grant their own degrees.
IIIT Guwahati offers programmes at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels, primarily in computer science and engineering, electronics and communication engineering, and related areas of information technology. Admission to the undergraduate Bachelor of Technology programmes is conducted through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main), via the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling process used for the IITs, NITs, IIITs, and other centrally funded technical institutions.
Postgraduate admissions, including the Master of Technology and doctoral programmes, are typically based on the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) and institute-level selection processes.
The institute is located in Guwahati, the largest city of Assam and a major educational and commercial hub of the North-East. Guwahati is also home to other higher-education institutions including the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati and Gauhati University, contributing to a sizeable academic ecosystem in the region.
As one of the IIITs in the North-East of India, IIIT Guwahati plays a role in strengthening technical education and research capacity in the region. By drawing students from across India through national-level entrance examinations, it also contributes to broader integration of the region into India's higher-education and research networks.
