IIITDM Jabalpur was conceived as part of an initiative by the Government of India to create specialised technical institutes that combine the disciplines of information technology, product design and manufacturing. The model emphasises an integrated curriculum in which design thinking, computing and manufacturing systems are taught together, intended to address the engineering needs of Indian industry. A similar institute was established earlier at Kancheepuram in Tamil Nadu, and IIITDM Jabalpur was set up to extend this educational model to central India.
The institute offers undergraduate Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) programmes, postgraduate Master of Technology (M.Tech.) and Master of Design (M.Des.) programmes, and doctoral (Ph.D.) programmes. Core disciplines include:
Admission to the B.Tech. programmes is conducted through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main) and the centralised counselling process administered by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA). Postgraduate admissions use national-level examinations such as GATE for M.Tech. and CEED for M.Des.
The institute operates from a campus in the Dumna area of Jabalpur, on the outskirts of the city. The campus houses academic blocks, laboratories for computing, electronics and manufacturing, central facilities such as a library and computing centre, hostels for students, and residential quarters for faculty and staff.
As a deemed-to-be university, IIITDM Jabalpur is governed by a Board of Governors, with a Director serving as the chief academic and administrative officer. The Senate is responsible for academic matters, including curriculum, examinations and the award of degrees. The institute is funded and administratively overseen by the Ministry of Education, Government of India.
IIITDM Jabalpur is among a small set of Indian technical institutions that explicitly combine design and manufacturing with information technology in their academic identity. Its presence has contributed to the expansion of higher technical education in Madhya Pradesh and central India, and it participates in national research and innovation programmes promoted by the Government of India.
