The Indian Institutes of Information Technology were conceived by the Government of India to provide focused education and research in information technology, and to build human resources to support the country's IT and electronics industry. A set of these institutes was established under a public–private partnership model jointly funded by the central government, the respective state government, and industry partners. IIIT Bhagalpur falls within this group of PPP-mode IIITs and is associated with the state of Bihar.
The institute primarily offers undergraduate Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) programmes in computer science and engineering and related branches such as electronics and communication engineering, along with postgraduate and doctoral research opportunities. Admission to the B.Tech. programmes is conducted through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main, with seat allotment via the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling process used for IITs, NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded technical institutions.
The institute is situated in Bhagalpur, a historic city on the southern bank of the Ganges in eastern Bihar. Bhagalpur is well connected by rail and road and serves as an educational and commercial centre for the region, hosting other higher-education institutions such as Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University.
As one of the IIITs established under the national PPP scheme, IIIT Bhagalpur contributes to expanding capacity in technical education in eastern India and to strengthening the IT-skilled workforce in Bihar. Together with institutions such as IIT Patna and NIT Patna, it forms part of the network of centrally supported engineering and technology institutes serving the state.
