IIHMR was established as a specialised institution to address the need for trained managers and researchers in the Indian health sector. It evolved from a research and training society into a university dedicated to building professional capacity in public health systems, hospital management and the pharmaceutical industry. The Jaipur campus serves as the parent institution of the IIHMR network, which has grown to include sister campuses in other Indian cities.
The university offers postgraduate management programmes oriented towards the healthcare sector, along with doctoral research and a range of executive training and certification courses. Its academic emphasis combines management studies with public health, epidemiology, health economics and health information systems. Faculty work spans research and consultancy assignments commissioned by government bodies, multilateral agencies and private sector organisations active in healthcare.
IIHMR has a long-standing tradition of applied research in areas such as maternal and child health, health systems strengthening, reproductive health, communicable disease control, and the management of health programmes. Its consultancy arm has worked on assignments for state and central government health departments, as well as international development organisations engaged in India.
As one of the few Indian universities focused specifically on health management, IIHMR plays a notable role in producing professionals for hospitals, public health programmes, pharmaceutical companies and development agencies. Its alumni are employed across the Indian healthcare system as well as in international health organisations.
