The Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), commonly known as the Pusa Institute, is India's national institute for agricultural research, education and extension. It is financed and administered by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), and its main campus is located in New Delhi.
The institute traces its origins to Pusa in Bihar, where it was established in 1911 as the Imperial Institute of Agricultural Research. It was renamed the Imperial Agricultural Research Institute in 1919. Following a major earthquake in Pusa in 1934, the institute was relocated to Delhi in 1936, and the name "Pusa Institute" has continued in popular usage owing to its early association with that location.
IARI undertakes research, postgraduate education and extension activities across a wide range of agricultural sciences. The institute was responsible for the research leading to the Green Revolution in India of the 1970s, which significantly transformed Indian agriculture, particularly in the production of food grains.
In the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) India Rankings 2024, IARI was ranked first among Agriculture and Allied Universities.
