Background

Idea Cellular traces its origins to the liberalisation of the Indian telecommunications sector in the 1990s, when private operators were licensed to provide cellular services in various circles. The company evolved through a series of mergers and rebrandings involving regional operators, eventually consolidating under the Aditya Birla Group's ownership. It was listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange of India.

At its peak as an independent operator, Idea provided 2G, 3G and 4G LTE services across all telecom circles in India, ranking among the top operators by subscriber base alongside Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India and Reliance Communications.

Merger with Vodafone India

The merger between Idea Cellular and Vodafone India was completed on 31 August 2018, creating what was then India's largest telecom operator by subscriber count. The combined entity, Vodafone Idea Limited, operated under the dual Vodafone and Idea brand identities before unifying under the "Vi" brand in 2020. The Aditya Birla Group and the Vodafone Group became the principal shareholders of the merged company.

Significance

Idea Cellular was a major player during a transformative period in Indian telecommunications, contributing to the rapid expansion of mobile connectivity across urban and rural India. Its advertising campaigns, often centred on themes of social change and the unifying power of mobile communication, made the brand widely recognised. The merger that ended its independent existence reshaped the Indian telecom market, which subsequently consolidated to three major private operators.
