ITI Limited was set up to indigenise the production of telecommunications equipment in India, reducing reliance on imports for telephone exchanges, transmission systems and customer-premises equipment. Originally incorporated as Indian Telephone Industries Limited, the company was later rebranded as ITI Limited. Over the decades it has manufactured a range of products, including strowger and crossbar exchanges in the early years, electronic switching systems, optical fibre and microwave transmission equipment, GSM mobile equipment, and defence and strategic communications products.
ITI operates manufacturing plants at multiple locations in India. Its principal facilities are located at:
The company's portfolio spans switching equipment, transmission products, access products, satellite communication systems, encryption and network management solutions, and turnkey project execution. ITI has also undertaken contract manufacturing for various government programmes and has been associated with national initiatives such as the rollout of mobile networks for the public sector operator, the Network for Spectrum project for the armed forces, and electronic voting machine production.
As one of the earliest public sector enterprises in independent India's industrial planning, ITI played a central role in the expansion of the country's telephone infrastructure during the era when telecommunications was largely a state monopoly. Its plants in smaller towns such as Mankapur, Naini and Rae Bareli contributed to regional industrialisation and skilled employment. With the liberalisation of the telecom sector from the 1990s onwards, the company has had to adapt to a competitive market dominated by private and foreign manufacturers.
