IIT Ropar was set up as part of the expansion of the IIT system announced by the Government of India in 2008, which led to the creation of new IITs in several states including Punjab, Bihar, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh. IIT Delhi served as the mentor institute during the formative years, supporting curriculum development, faculty recruitment, and academic administration before IIT Ropar matured into an autonomous body.
The institute initially operated from a transit campus in Rupnagar while a permanent campus was developed at Birla Seed Farms on the banks of the Sutlej river. The town of Rupnagar, historically known as Ropar, has archaeological associations with the Indus Valley Civilisation, and lies in the Shivalik foothills of Punjab.
IIT Ropar offers Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) programmes in disciplines such as Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. Postgraduate offerings include Master of Technology (M.Tech), Master of Science (M.Sc), and doctoral (Ph.D) programmes across engineering, the basic sciences, and humanities and social sciences.
Admissions to undergraduate engineering programmes are made through the Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced), while postgraduate admissions are based on examinations such as GATE and JAM, in line with the common admission framework followed by the IIT system.
The permanent campus at Birla Seed Farms in Rupnagar houses academic blocks, research laboratories, hostels, and faculty residences. The institute has developed research activity in areas including artificial intelligence and data science, biomedical engineering, smart manufacturing, materials science, and sustainable energy. IIT Ropar hosts technology innovation activities and incubation initiatives aimed at promoting entrepreneurship among students and researchers.
As one of the second-generation IITs, IIT Ropar contributes to the regional availability of high-quality technical education in northern India and complements older institutions such as IIT Delhi, IIT Roorkee, and IIT Kanpur. It is among the centrally funded technical institutions that support national priorities in engineering education, scientific research, and innovation.
