IIT Indore was established in 2009 as part of the Government of India's expansion of the IIT system, which added new institutes in Indore, Mandi, Bhubaneswar, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Patna, Jodhpur and Ropar. The institute initially operated from a temporary campus while the permanent campus at Simrol was developed. The Indian Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 2011 formally brought the new IITs, including IIT Indore, under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961, granting them the status of Institutes of National Importance.
The permanent campus is situated at Simrol, located south-west of Indore city along the Khandwa road. The campus houses academic departments, residential halls, research centres, sports facilities and administrative blocks, set within a hilly landscape characteristic of the Malwa plateau region.
The institute offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes through schools and departments covering engineering, the sciences, humanities and social sciences. Bachelor of Technology programmes are offered in disciplines such as computer science and engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, chemical engineering, metallurgical engineering and materials science. Postgraduate programmes include Master of Technology, Master of Science and Master of Arts degrees, alongside PhD programmes across all departments.
Admission to the undergraduate engineering programmes is conducted through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced, while postgraduate admissions are based on examinations such as GATE, JAM and other national-level tests.
As one of the newer IITs, IIT Indore contributes to higher technical education and research output in central India, a region historically served by fewer national-level technical institutions. The institute participates in national rankings such as the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) and engages in collaborative research with Indian and international academic and industrial partners.
