The Indian School of Mines was founded during the colonial period to address the need for trained personnel in the coal mining industry centred around the Jharia coalfield, one of the principal sources of coking coal in India. Dhanbad's location at the heart of this coal belt made it a natural site for an institution devoted to mining education and research. Over the decades, the institute broadened its academic scope from mining and geology to include a wide range of engineering, science, management, and humanities disciplines.
IIT (ISM) Dhanbad offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes across engineering, applied sciences, management studies, and humanities. It retains particular strength in mining engineering, petroleum engineering, applied geology, and applied geophysics, fields in which it has a long-standing national reputation. The institute conducts research in areas such as energy resources, earth sciences, materials, environmental engineering, and emerging interdisciplinary domains.
Undergraduate admission to the B.Tech. programmes is conducted through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced via the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA), in common with other IITs. Postgraduate admissions are typically based on the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) and other national-level entrance examinations.
The campus is situated in Dhanbad and includes academic departments, research laboratories, residential halls for students, faculty housing, and sporting and cultural facilities. Dhanbad is connected by rail and road to major Indian cities and lies in the eastern part of the country, within the Chota Nagpur Plateau region.
As one of the oldest technical institutions in India, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad has played a notable role in the development of the country's mining, mineral, and energy sectors. Its alumni have contributed to public sector enterprises such as Coal India Limited, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, and Indian Oil Corporation, as well as to academia, private industry, and public administration. Its elevation to IIT status in 2016 marked the recognition of its expanded academic profile beyond its traditional focus on mining.
