The Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar (IIT Bhubaneswar) is a public technical and research university located in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India. It is one of the Indian Institutes of Technology, a group of autonomous engineering and technology institutes declared as Institutes of National Importance under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961. The institute was established in 2008 as part of the second wave of new IITs created by the Government of India to expand high-quality technical education across the country.

The Government of India announced the creation of several new IITs during the Eleventh Five-Year Plan period to widen access to engineering education and to anchor research capacity in regions outside the older IIT clusters. IIT Bhubaneswar was among this set of institutions, alongside new IITs such as those at Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Jodhpur, Patna, Ropar, Indore and Mandi. The institute was set up to serve eastern India and to complement the existing IIT presence in Kharagpur and Guwahati.
The institute is organised into schools rather than conventional departments, integrating allied disciplines into broader academic units. Teaching and research span engineering, the basic sciences, and the humanities and social sciences. Programmes offered include the Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in core engineering branches, dual-degree and Master's level programmes in engineering and sciences, and doctoral (PhD) programmes across disciplines.
Admissions to undergraduate engineering programmes are made through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Advanced), while postgraduate admissions use national-level examinations such as the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE).
The permanent campus is situated at Argul, off National Highway 16, on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar in Khordha district. It hosts academic schools, central research facilities, student hostels, faculty and staff housing, sports infrastructure, and amenities. The campus has been planned with attention to sustainability, including landscape conservation and water management features.
As the first IIT established in Odisha, IIT Bhubaneswar plays a central role in the state's higher education and research landscape. It contributes to skilled human-resource development for industry and academia, supports applied research relevant to eastern India, and acts as a regional anchor for technology-led innovation, including engagements with industry, government and other educational institutions.
