IIT Bhilai is among the second generation of IITs announced by the Government of India to expand access to high-quality technical education across the country. Chhattisgarh, a mineral-rich state in central India and home to the steel city of Bhilai, was identified as the location for one of these new institutes. The institute began functioning with mentorship from an older, established IIT during its initial years, a practice followed for several of the newer IITs.
The institute offers Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) programmes in core engineering disciplines such as Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. Postgraduate programmes include Master of Technology (M.Tech) and Master of Science (M.Sc) degrees, alongside Ph.D. programmes across engineering, the sciences and the humanities. Admission to undergraduate programmes is conducted through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Advanced), while postgraduate admissions follow national-level examinations such as GATE and IIT JAM.
The permanent campus of IIT Bhilai is being developed at Kutelabhata in the Durg district of Chhattisgarh, in proximity to Bhilai. During its initial years, the institute operated from a transit campus while construction of the permanent campus progressed.
As the first IIT to be established in Chhattisgarh, the institute plays a role in strengthening higher technical education in central India and in supporting research and innovation linked to the region's industrial and natural resource base. It contributes to the broader policy of expanding the IIT system to underserved regions of the country.
