The Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts of India was established in 1984 and subsequently set up a group of universities across several Indian states under enabling state legislation. ICFAI University, Himachal Pradesh was established under an Act of the Himachal Pradesh state legislature, which conferred on it the status of a state private university with the authority to award degrees as specified by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
The university typically organises its academic activities through faculties or schools covering management studies, law, science and technology, education, and liberal arts. Programmes are offered at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels, including doctoral research leading to the PhD degree. Like other universities in the ICFAI group, it places emphasis on case-based teaching and structured continuous evaluation.
As a state private university, ICFAI University, Himachal Pradesh is recognised by the University Grants Commission under the relevant provisions of the UGC Act, 1956. Programmes in professional disciplines are subject to the regulatory frameworks of the respective national councils, such as the Bar Council of India for legal education.
The campus is situated in the Solan region of Himachal Pradesh, an area in the lower Himalayas that hosts several higher education institutions due to its proximity to the Chandigarh–Shimla corridor.
The university contributes to the expansion of private higher education in Himachal Pradesh, a state where formal university-level institutions were historically concentrated in a few public bodies. It forms part of a wider network of ICFAI universities operating in states including Tripura, Sikkim, Jharkhand, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Rajasthan, Dehradun, and Raipur, alongside the deemed-to-be-university ICFAI Foundation for Higher Education in Hyderabad.
