IBM India is the Indian operating arm of the International Business Machines Corporation (IBM), an American multinational technology company headquartered in Armonk, New York. IBM's association with India dates back to the mid-twentieth century, when the company supplied tabulating and accounting machines to Indian businesses and government departments. Following changes in Indian foreign investment policy, IBM exited the country in the late 1970s. After economic liberalisation in the early 1990s, IBM re-entered the Indian market through a joint venture with the Tata group, known as Tata Information Systems Limited, which later evolved into Tata IBM and was eventually consolidated into IBM Global Services India.
