HyperCity was launched as a hypermarket venture by Shoppers Stop Ltd., the department store chain promoted by the K. Raheja Corp group. The format was conceived to compete in the emerging organised hypermarket segment in India, alongside chains such as Big Bazaar, Star Bazaar, and Reliance's hypermarket formats. Stores typically spanned tens of thousands of square feet and stocked a wide range of categories, positioning the brand for family shopping and bulk purchases.
The first HyperCity store was opened in Malad, Mumbai. Over the following years the chain expanded to several Indian cities, with stores in metropolitan and tier-1 markets including Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Ludhiana, Bhopal, Amritsar, Vadodara, and others. The company operated as a subsidiary of Shoppers Stop and remained a separate brand from the parent's department-store business.
In December 2017, Future Retail Ltd., promoted by Kishore Biyani, announced the acquisition of HyperCity from Shoppers Stop. The transaction consolidated Future Retail's leadership in the Indian organised retail sector and merged HyperCity's operations with the Future group's retail portfolio, which already included the Big Bazaar and Easyday formats. Following the acquisition, HyperCity stores were progressively rebranded or absorbed into Future Retail's existing formats.
HyperCity stores were positioned as one-stop family shopping destinations. The product mix typically included:
The chain also developed private-label products across grocery and household categories.
HyperCity was among the early entrants in India's organised hypermarket segment during the mid-2000s retail boom. Its acquisition by Future Retail in 2017 was viewed as a notable consolidation event in Indian organised retail, reflecting the broader trend of scale-driven mergers in the sector before the financial difficulties that later affected the Future group.
