The building occupied by the hotel dates from the French colonial period of Pondicherry, when the town served as the capital of Établissements français dans l'Inde. The French Quarter, in which the property stands, retains a concentration of 18th- and 19th-century mansions characterised by deep verandahs, internal courtyards, lime-plastered walls and shuttered windows, many of which have been recognised as heritage structures by the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH).
The mansion was converted into a hotel as part of the wider movement to preserve Puducherry's colonial-era built heritage by repurposing private residences for hospitality and cultural use. The interiors retain period features, and the rooms are individually styled and named after former French Indian territories and towns, in keeping with Neemrana's practice across its heritage portfolio.
Hotel de l'Orient is frequently cited in travel and conservation literature as an example of adaptive reuse of colonial architecture in India. Along with other restored properties in the Boulevard area of Puducherry, it contributes to the town's identity as a centre of Indo-French heritage tourism.
