Hodal is situated in the southern plains of Haryana, close to the border with Uttar Pradesh and the Braj region. The city lies on National Highway 19 (the Delhi–Kolkata corridor, formerly NH 2), which connects it northwards to Palwal, Faridabad and Delhi, and southwards to Mathura and Agra. The surrounding tract is part of the agriculturally productive alluvial belt of the Yamuna basin, and the area extends into the culturally distinct Mewat region to the west.
Hodal is administered by a municipal council and forms one of the tehsils of Palwal district, which was carved out of the erstwhile Faridabad district in 2008. Earlier, prior to the creation of Faridabad district, the area was part of Gurgaon district. Hodal also functions as the headquarters of a community development block.
The town has long stood on the historical route between Delhi and Mathura, which gave it commercial importance during the medieval period. The region around Hodal is associated with traditions of the Braj cultural sphere as well as with Mewati folk culture, including the legend of Dhola–Maru, with which local memorial sites are popularly linked.
The local economy is based primarily on agriculture, with wheat, mustard, bajra and vegetables being important crops. Dairying and trade in agricultural produce are significant occupations. The city's position on a major highway has supported the growth of roadside commerce, transport-related services, and small-scale industry.
Hodal hosts a range of government and private schools, colleges affiliated to universities in Haryana, and standard urban civic amenities including a government hospital, banks, and a police station. As part of the NCR, the town is included in regional planning frameworks coordinated by the National Capital Region Planning Board.
