The fort stands on a rocky outcrop rising above the surrounding plains and farmland of the Mewat tract. It is built around a series of courtyards, ramparts, bastions and battlements, with a number of turrets giving it a distinctive silhouette. The fort has been adapted to function as a boutique heritage property while retaining its original walls, arched openings and stone construction.
Kesroli lies within the historical Mewat region, which has long been associated with the Khanzada Rajputs (Muslim Rajputs descended from the Yaduvanshi line). The fort is traditionally associated with this community and changed hands several times across the medieval period, reflecting the broader political shifts in Mewat between local chieftains and the Delhi-based powers.
In later centuries the fort came under the influence of the rulers of Alwar, before falling into disuse. It was restored in the late twentieth century and converted into a heritage hotel, becoming one of the early conservation-led adaptive reuse projects undertaken by Neemrana Hotels in Rajasthan, alongside their flagship property at Neemrana Fort-Palace.
The fort is constructed largely in dressed stone and lime, characteristic of forts of the Mewat-Alwar belt. Notable architectural features include:
Hill Fort Kesroli is part of the Neemrana group's portfolio of restored historical properties. The conversion preserves the fort's original layout, with rooms and suites distributed across the older chambers and bastions. The property is used both as a leisure destination and as a venue for weddings and small events, drawing visitors from Delhi NCR, Jaipur and Alwar.
Kesroli is situated in the rural hinterland of Alwar district, off the road network connecting Alwar with the Delhi–Jaipur corridor. The fort is accessible by road from Alwar town and from the National Capital Region. The Sariska Tiger Reserve, the city of Alwar, and the town of Neemrana are among the points of interest in the wider region.
The fort is significant for two reasons. Historically, it is a surviving example of a small hill fortification of the Mewat region, illustrating the layered political history of the area between the Khanzada chieftains, the Delhi Sultanate and Mughal authority, and the later princely state of Alwar. In contemporary terms, it is cited as an example of heritage conservation through adaptive reuse, where a derelict fort has been stabilised and maintained through commercial operation as a hotel.
