Background

Heritage Foods was founded in 1992 by Nara Chandrababu Naidu, who later served as Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. The company was established with a focus on procuring milk directly from farmers in Andhra Pradesh and supplying processed dairy products to urban consumers. Over time it expanded its procurement and distribution footprint into other southern Indian states and beyond.

Operations

The core of Heritage Foods' business is its dairy division, which handles raw milk procurement from rural collection centres, chilling and processing at plants, and distribution of packaged products. Its product portfolio includes liquid milk, curd, buttermilk, lassi, paneer, ghee, butter, ice cream, flavoured milk and milk-based beverages, sold under the Heritage brand.

Procurement is built around village-level milk collection arrangements with dairy farmers, supported by bulk milk coolers and chilling centres. Processing and packaging plants supply distribution networks covering several Indian states, with a particularly strong presence in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra.

Corporate history

  • 1992: Heritage Foods incorporated, with dairy as its primary business.
  • 1990s–2000s: Expansion of milk procurement and processing capacity in Andhra Pradesh and adjoining states; entry into retail and other allied businesses.
  • 2006: Entry into organised food retail through a chain of Heritage Fresh retail stores.
  • 2017: Acquisition of the dairy business of Reliance Retail (the Reliance Dairy Life brand), expanding the company's footprint in northern and western India.

Diversification

In addition to dairy, Heritage Foods has at various points operated businesses in retail, agriculture and renewable energy. The retail arm, branded Heritage Fresh, ran a chain of grocery and fresh-produce stores in southern India before the company restructured its non-dairy operations to focus on its core dairy business.

Significance

Heritage Foods is considered one of the prominent private dairy companies in India, alongside cooperatives such as Amul and other regional players. Its procurement network provides a market for a large number of dairy farmers in southern India, and the company is frequently cited in discussions of organised private dairy in the country.
