The college operates under the management of the Church of South India (CSI), which inherited a network of educational institutions established in central Travancore through the work of Anglican missionaries during the nineteenth century. Henry Baker, after whom the college is named, was a member of the Church Mission Society and is remembered for his missionary and educational engagement with communities in the Travancore hill regions.
As a college affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, Henry Baker College follows the university's curriculum and examination system. It offers undergraduate programmes in arts, science and commerce streams, with selected postgraduate programmes. Admissions are conducted in line with the norms of the affiliating university and the Government of Kerala for aided colleges.
The campus is situated at Melukavu, a hilly location in the eastern part of Kottayam district that lies on the route between Pala and the high ranges. The surrounding region is known for rubber and spice cultivation, and the college serves students from the rural belt of eastern Kottayam and adjoining parts of Idukki district.
Henry Baker College is one of several Christian minority-managed higher education institutions in Kerala that trace their lineage to nineteenth-century missionary educational efforts. It plays a role in providing access to university-level education in a relatively remote part of central Kerala, complementing similar institutions in Pala, Kanjirappally and Kottayam town.
