The state of Uttarakhand was carved out of Uttar Pradesh in November 2000. As medical and health sciences education in the new state expanded, the Government of Uttarakhand established a dedicated university to affiliate and regulate institutions offering courses in medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy, and other paramedical disciplines.
