Harsh Chhaya (born 2 December 1966) is an Indian actor known for his work in Hindi television and films. He has appeared in a range of character and antagonist roles since the early 1990s, and is particularly remembered for his portrayal of Krishnakant Trivedi (KT) in the mid-1990s television series Hasratein.

Background

Chhaya entered the Indian television industry during the early years of satellite broadcasting in India, when private channels such as Zee TV were beginning to commission long-format Hindi serials.

Career

Television

Chhaya made his acting debut in a minor role as "Jijo" in the early 1990s Zee TV series Tara. He came into prominence with the mid-1990s series Hasratein, in which he played Krishnakant Trivedi, commonly referred to as KT. The character was depicted as a wealthy employer who drew his married employee, Savi, into an extramarital relationship — a storyline that was considered notable for Indian television of the period.

He has subsequently appeared in numerous Hindi television series, taking on a mix of character roles and negative roles.

Films

Chhaya has also worked in Hindi cinema. Among his film appearances is the 2007 production Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, in which he featured alongside Rani Mukerji.

Significance

Chhaya's role in Hasratein is regarded as one of the better-known portrayals of a morally ambiguous male lead in 1990s Hindi television, a period when serialised drama on private satellite channels was reshaping the storytelling conventions of Indian television.
