Harmanpreet Singh was born on 6 January 1996 in Timmowal, a village in the Amritsar district of Punjab. He grew up in a farming family and took up hockey as a youngster, training in Punjab before progressing through the Surjit Hockey Academy in Jalandhar, a well-known nursery for Indian hockey talent. His early development focused on defensive play and the drag-flick, the technique used to take penalty corners.
Harmanpreet emerged through the India under-21 set-up and was a key member of the Indian junior team that won the 2016 Men's Hockey Junior World Cup, held in Lucknow. India defeated Belgium in the final, and Harmanpreet was among the squad's leading scorers from set-pieces during the tournament.
Harmanpreet made his senior debut for India in 2015 and quickly became the team's first-choice drag-flicker. He has represented India at multiple editions of the FIH Hockey World Cup, the Asian Games, the Asian Champions Trophy, the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup and the FIH Pro League.
At the Tokyo Olympics, held in 2021, Harmanpreet was part of the Indian men's hockey team that won the bronze medal by defeating Germany in the play-off. The medal was India's first Olympic podium finish in men's hockey since 1980 and Harmanpreet was among the team's top scorers in the tournament.
He was appointed captain of the Indian men's senior team and led the side at the 2024 Paris Olympics. India again finished with the bronze medal, defeating Spain in the third-place match. Harmanpreet was the tournament's joint highest goal-scorer and was central to India's run to the medal, scoring repeatedly from penalty corners.
Harmanpreet captained India to the gold medal at the 2022 Asian Games (held in 2023 in Hangzhou, China), a victory that also secured direct qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics. He has also been part of India's winning campaigns at the Asian Champions Trophy on multiple occasions.
In Indian domestic hockey, Harmanpreet has played in the Hockey India League, including stints with franchises such as Dabang Mumbai. He has represented Punjab and Indian Railways in national-level tournaments. With the revival of the Hockey India League, he has continued to feature for top franchises.
Harmanpreet is primarily a centre-back known for his composure in defence, long passing range and ability to launch attacks from deep. His most distinctive contribution, however, is his drag-flick, which combines high speed with accuracy and variation. He is regularly among the top scorers in international tournaments despite playing as a defender, an unusual statistic that reflects his role as the team's principal penalty-corner taker.
Harmanpreet Singh's career has coincided with a sustained revival of Indian men's hockey at the elite level. As a drag-flicker and captain, he has been central to India winning back-to-back Olympic bronze medals (2020 and 2024), the first time the country has achieved consecutive Olympic medals in hockey since the 1970s–80s. His individual recognition, including the FIH Player of the Year award, has placed him among the most decorated Indian hockey players of his generation.
