The company was originally incorporated as Hindustan Latex Limited with the principal mandate of manufacturing condoms to support the National Family Welfare Programme of the Government of India. Its first manufacturing unit was set up at Peroorkada in Thiruvananthapuram, with technical collaboration from a Japanese partner. Over the years, the company expanded its product portfolio beyond contraceptives into a broader range of healthcare products and services, and was renamed HLL Lifecare Limited to reflect this diversified business.
HLL Lifecare operates manufacturing facilities at multiple locations in India, including units in Kerala (Peroorkada and Akkulam in Thiruvananthapuram, and Kanagala is in Karnataka), as well as plants in other states. Its product lines include:

HLL Lifecare has historically played a central role in implementing the family planning and reproductive health programmes of the Government of India by ensuring the availability of contraceptives at scale.
