Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) is one of the oldest and most prominent government medical institutions in the northeastern region of India. Located in Guwahati, the largest city of Assam, GMCH serves a dual role as a centre of undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and as a major public referral hospital catering to patients from across Assam and the broader Northeast India region. The institution is affiliated with Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences, which is the apex body for health sciences education in Assam.
GMCH was established in the mid-twentieth century, making it one of the pioneering medical colleges in Assam. Its founding was part of broader post-independence efforts by the Government of Assam to develop healthcare infrastructure and produce trained medical professionals for a region that historically faced significant shortages of qualified doctors and medical facilities.
