GSRTC was constituted under the Road Transport Corporations Act, 1950, a central legislation that allowed Indian states to set up dedicated road transport corporations as autonomous bodies for organised passenger services. Like its counterparts in other states, GSRTC functions under the administrative control of the state transport department and is governed by a board with representation from the state government.
The corporation operates bus services connecting district headquarters, taluka towns and villages within Gujarat, and runs interstate services to destinations in adjoining states such as Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Service categories typically include ordinary or "mofussil" buses for rural connectivity, express services on intercity routes, and premium air-conditioned and sleeper coaches on long-distance corridors.
GSRTC's network is organised into regional divisions, each responsible for depots, workshops and bus stations within its territory. Major bus stations include those at Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot, Bhavnagar, Jamnagar, Junagadh and Gandhinagar, among others. The corporation also undertakes contract carriage operations, school and college transport in some areas, and seasonal services to pilgrimage centres such as Somnath, Dwarka, Ambaji and Pavagadh.
In addition to its core stage carriage services, GSRTC has progressively introduced online reservations, electronic ticketing, and premium service brands for long-distance travel. Bus stations in several cities have been redeveloped under public-private partnership models, integrating commercial space with passenger facilities.
As the principal public bus operator in Gujarat, GSRTC plays a key role in providing affordable mobility to students, daily commuters, and rural populations who depend on scheduled bus services for access to markets, hospitals, educational institutions and administrative centres. The corporation also offers concessional travel to specified categories of passengers, including students, senior citizens, freedom fighters and persons with disabilities, in line with state government policy.
