Elliott played a defining role in New Zealand's campaign at the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup, co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand. In the semi-final against South Africa, he produced a Man of the Match performance that sent New Zealand into their first World Cup final. New Zealand eventually finished as runners-up at the tournament.
In March 2017, Elliott announced his retirement from international cricket. He subsequently retired from all forms of cricket in August 2018, bringing his playing career to a close.
Elliott's contribution at the 2015 World Cup remains a landmark moment in New Zealand cricket history, as it ended a long wait for a World Cup final appearance by the Black Caps. His role as a finisher in the middle order and his ability to bowl medium pace made him a useful all-format option for New Zealand during his international career.
