The Government of Jammu and Kashmir, in coordination with the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, sanctioned a series of new government medical colleges across the region as part of the central scheme for setting up new medical colleges attached to existing district hospitals. GMC Kathua is among the institutions established under this expansion, alongside similar colleges at Anantnag, Baramulla, Doda, Rajouri and Udhampur.
The college offers the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree. Admissions to the undergraduate programme are conducted through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG), in line with the regulations of the National Medical Commission. Clinical training is provided through the associated hospital that serves as the college's teaching hospital.
GMC Kathua contributes to the availability of trained medical professionals in the Jammu region and provides referral and tertiary-level healthcare services to residents of Kathua district and surrounding areas. The institution forms part of efforts to decentralise medical education in Jammu and Kashmir, which had earlier been concentrated in the older colleges at Srinagar and Jammu.
