The college was set up as part of a broader initiative by the Government of India and the Government of Jammu and Kashmir to establish new medical colleges in underserved districts. Doda, situated in the Chenab Valley region of Jammu division, was identified as a site to improve access to medical education and to strengthen tertiary care services for the hilly districts surrounding it, including Kishtwar and Ramban.
The college offers the undergraduate Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme. Admissions to the MBBS course are made through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), in line with the regulatory framework laid down for medical admissions in India.
An associated teaching hospital provides clinical training for students and serves as a referral centre for patients from Doda and neighbouring districts in the Chenab region. The hospital supports outpatient, inpatient, and emergency services across major clinical specialities.
GMC Doda is significant in the context of healthcare development in Jammu and Kashmir as it brings medical education and specialist services closer to a remote, mountainous region historically dependent on facilities in Jammu city or Srinagar. It contributes to local employment, retention of healthcare professionals in the region, and improved health outcomes in the Chenab Valley.
