Government Engineering College Chitradurga, commonly referred to as GEC Chitradurga, is a state-run engineering institution located in Chitradurga district in the central part of Karnataka, India. Administered by the Government of Karnataka and affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belagavi, the college offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in engineering and technology. It forms part of the network of government engineering colleges established across Karnataka to extend quality technical education to students from semi-urban and rural backgrounds.
Chitradurga, historically significant as the site of the famous hill fortress associated with the Nayaka rulers and later Hyder Ali, is situated along the National Highway connecting Bengaluru and Davangere. The college serves students primarily from Chitradurga, Davangere, Tumkur, and neighbouring districts of central Karnataka.
The college offers Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) programmes across several core and emerging engineering disciplines. Postgraduate programmes at the Master of Technology (M.Tech.) level are offered in select specialisations, subject to VTU norms and government approvals.
M.Tech. programmes are offered in select departments, aligned with VTU's postgraduate curriculum framework. The specific specialisations available may vary based on intake approvals granted by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the state government.
All academic programmes follow the curriculum prescribed by Visvesvaraya Technological University. Semester-end examinations are conducted by VTU, while internal assessments are managed by the college. The institution also participates in VTU's Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) framework, which allows students a degree of flexibility in elective selection.
The college campus houses separate department blocks, a central library, computer laboratories, and workshops suited to the engineering disciplines offered. The library maintains a collection of technical texts, reference volumes, and provides access to digital resources through VTU's e-learning initiatives.
Hostel accommodation is available separately for male and female students, a feature particularly important given the college's role in serving students from rural districts who relocate for their studies. Sports grounds and indoor facilities support physical education and extracurricular activities. The campus is connected to the town's road network and is accessible by public transport.
Admission to undergraduate B.E. programmes is conducted through the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) via the Karnataka Common Entrance Test (KCET). Seats are allocated under government quota norms, with reservations applicable as per Karnataka state reservation policy for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, and other categories.
Admission to M.Tech. programmes follows the Karnataka Post Graduate Common Entrance Test (KPGCET) or GATE scores, as applicable under VTU and state government guidelines. Lateral entry admissions for diploma holders into the second year of B.E. programmes are also facilitated through KEA.
The college hosts a range of technical and cultural activities through student associations and departmental clubs. Annual technical fests and cultural events provide students with platforms for project exhibitions, paper presentations, and inter-collegiate competitions. The National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of the college engages students in community outreach, rural development activities, and awareness programmes in and around Chitradurga district.
Being a government institution, GEC Chitradurga maintains relatively affordable fee structures compared to private engineering colleges, making it an accessible option for students from economically weaker sections of central Karnataka.
