Godrej & Boyce was established by Ardeshir Godrej, a Parsi entrepreneur, who began manufacturing locks in a small shed in Lalbaug, Mumbai. The company name retained a reference to an early financial backer, Boyce. Ardeshir was later joined by his younger brother Pirojsha Burjorji Godrej, who expanded the manufacturing operations and acquired large tracts of land in Vikhroli, in north-eastern Mumbai, where the company's principal manufacturing campus is still located.
The company is significant in Indian industrial history for producing the country's first indigenously made safe, the first springless lock, and for being among the early Indian firms to manufacture refrigerators, typewriters, and office equipment. Godrej is also credited with developing a vegetable oil-based soap in the early twentieth century.
Godrej & Boyce operates through multiple business divisions, including:
The company's headquarters and primary manufacturing complex is located in Vikhroli, Mumbai. The Godrej group is also known for conserving a significant area of mangrove forest along the Thane Creek adjacent to its Vikhroli land holdings, and operates the Soonabai Pirojsha Godrej Marine Ecology Centre to study and protect the mangrove ecosystem.
In 2024, the Godrej family announced a formal division of the broader Godrej business empire between two branches of the family. Under the arrangement, Godrej & Boyce, along with its associated land bank in Mumbai, came under the stewardship of the branch led by Jamshyd Godrej and Smita Godrej Crishna, while the listed Godrej Industries-led entities went to the branch headed by Adi Godrej and Nadir Godrej.
Godrej & Boyce is considered one of the pioneering enterprises of Indian industry under the Swadeshi movement and remained privately held throughout its history. It is widely cited as an early example of indigenous Indian manufacturing capability, particularly for producing locks, safes, and consumer durables that competed with imported goods. The company has played a role in supplying critical engineering equipment to India's defence, space, and energy sectors.
