Situated on the banks of the Godavari River, the town is one of the principal coal mining centres of Telangana and serves as a major operational hub of Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL). Godavarikhani lies in the northern part of Telangana, along the southern bank of the Godavari River. The terrain is part of the Godavari coal belt, which extends through several districts of northern Telangana. The town is connected by road to Karimnagar, Peddapalli and Mancherial, and the nearest broad-gauge railway access is through stations of the South Central Railway in the surrounding area.
Godavarikhani functions as a municipal town. Following the bifurcation of Karimnagar district in 2016, the town was placed under the newly formed Peddapalli district. It is part of the Ramagundam revenue division and lies adjacent to the urban agglomeration of Ramagundam, with which it shares much of its industrial and civic character.
The economy of Godavarikhani is dominated by coal mining operations conducted by Singareni Collieries Company Limited, a public sector undertaking jointly owned by the Government of Telangana and the Government of India. SCCL operates several underground and opencast mines in and around the town, and Godavarikhani houses administrative offices, workshops and residential colonies for company employees.
The presence of large mining operations has shaped local employment patterns, supporting allied activities such as transport, trade and services. The neighbouring Ramagundam Super Thermal Power Station, run by NTPC, and the Ramagundam Fertilizers and Chemicals plant further contribute to the industrial economy of the wider region.
The town's population is largely composed of mining workers and their families, drawn from across Telangana and neighbouring states. Telugu is the principal language, with Urdu and Hindi also widely used. The community life of the town is closely linked to SCCL through company schools, hospitals, sports facilities and worker housing colonies.
Godavarikhani is connected by state highways to Karimnagar, Peddapalli, Mancherial and Hyderabad. Public transport is operated primarily by the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC). Rail access for the town is available through stations on the Kazipet–Balharshah section of the South Central Railway, including Ramagundam.
Educational institutions in Godavarikhani include government schools, junior colleges, degree colleges and technical institutes. Singareni Collieries operates schools and a hospital network for its employees and dependents. Civic amenities such as water supply, sanitation and town planning are administered by the municipality.
Godavarikhani is significant as one of the oldest and largest coal-mining townships in Telangana, and as a centre of trade union activity associated with the coal industry in the state. Its development is closely tied to the expansion of Singareni Collieries during the twentieth century, which transformed the area from a small settlement on the Godavari into an industrial town.
