The university traces its institutional roots to the Girijananda Chowdhury Institute of Management and Technology, founded by the Shrimanta Shankar Academy Society in Guwahati. GIMT was established as a self-financing technical institute affiliated to a state university and offered programmes in engineering, management, and pharmacy. Over the years, it grew into one of the larger private technical institutions in the North-East.
