Ghulam Ahmed was based in Hyderabad, which was one of the prominent centres of Indian domestic cricket in the mid-twentieth century. He developed as an off-spinner during a period when Indian cricket was beginning to establish itself on the international stage following the country's independence in 1947.
Ghulam Ahmed made his Test debut for India in the years immediately after independence and went on to play Test matches into the 1950s. He was regarded as part of a generation of Indian spin bowlers who laid the groundwork for the country's later reputation in spin bowling. He also captained India in Test cricket on a small number of occasions.
In domestic cricket, he played for Hyderabad in the Ranji Trophy, India's premier first-class competition, and was a senior figure in the side during his playing years.
Following his retirement from active cricket, Ghulam Ahmed remained associated with the administration of the game in India, including service with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as an official and selector.
Ghulam Ahmed is remembered as one of the early off-spinners of independent India's Test side and as a contributor to the institutional development of Indian cricket through his post-playing roles. His career bridges the formative phase of Indian Test cricket between the late 1940s and the late 1950s.
