Genelia D'Souza Deshmukh is an Indian actress and model who has worked predominantly in Telugu, Hindi, and Tamil films. She rose to prominence in the mid-2000s with a string of romantic films and is widely associated with the youth-oriented cinema of that period. After taking an extended break following her marriage in 2012, she returned to acting in the late 2010s.

Genelia D'Souza was born on 5 August 1987 in Mumbai into a Mangalorean Catholic family. Her father, Neil D'Souza, worked with the Indian Oil Corporation, and her mother, Jeanette D'Souza, held a senior position at a multinational firm. She was educated at Apostolic Carmel High School, Bandra, and later studied at St Andrew's College, Mumbai.
She entered the entertainment industry as a teenager through television commercials, most notably the Parker Pen advertisement opposite Amitabh Bachchan and a long-running Fanta campaign, both of which brought her early visibility.
Genelia made her acting debut in the Hindi film Tujhe Meri Kasam (2003), directed by Vijay K. Bhaskar, alongside Riteish Deshmukh. The same year she debuted in Telugu cinema with Satyam, opposite Sumanth, which performed well at the box office and established her in southern India.
Her career received a major boost with Bommarillu (2006), directed by Bhaskar and co-starring Siddharth. The film became a critical and commercial success and earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Telugu. She subsequently appeared in Telugu films such as Sye (2004), Samba (2004), Happy (2006), and Ready (2008).
Genelia made her Tamil debut with Sachien (2005) opposite Vijay. She earned wider acclaim for Santosh Subramaniam (2008), the Tamil remake of Bommarillu, opposite Jayam Ravi.
After her debut, she returned to Hindi cinema with Masti (2004) and gained widespread popularity with Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na (2008), directed by Abbas Tyrewala and produced by Aamir Khan Productions. The film, in which she starred opposite Imran Khan, was a major commercial success and earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. She subsequently featured in Life Partner (2009), It's My Life (filmed earlier, released 2020), and Force (2011) opposite John Abraham.
Following her marriage in February 2012 to actor Riteish Deshmukh, son of former Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, Genelia largely stepped away from acting. She returned to the screen with the Marathi film Ved (2022), directed by and co-starring her husband, marking her Marathi debut. She later appeared in the Hindi film Mister Mummy (2022) and reprised her career with subsequent projects.
Along with Riteish Deshmukh, Genelia co-founded Imagine Meats, a plant-based meat company launched in 2021 that produces vegetarian alternatives to traditional Indian meat preparations. She has also been associated with various endorsements and public health and wellness campaigns.
Genelia met Riteish Deshmukh during the filming of Tujhe Meri Kasam in 2003. They were in a long-term relationship before marrying in a civil ceremony on 3 February 2012, followed by Christian and Hindu ceremonies. The couple have two sons, born in 2014 and 2016. The family resides in Mumbai. Genelia has spoken publicly about adopting a vegetarian lifestyle and supporting environmental causes.
Genelia is regarded as one of the prominent female leads of Indian cinema in the late 2000s, particularly within Telugu and Hindi industries. Her on-screen image as a vivacious, urban young woman defined several romantic films of the period, and Bommarillu and Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na remain culturally significant titles in their respective industries.
