GITAM was founded by a group of educationists and public figures from Andhra Pradesh with the objective of providing quality higher education in technology and management. The founding vision was led by Dr. M. V. V. S. Murthi, who served as the institution's principal promoter. The Visakhapatnam campus, located on the coast of the Bay of Bengal at Rushikonda, has remained the institution's flagship site.
Initially established as an engineering college affiliated with Andhra University, the institute progressively expanded its academic offerings. In recognition of its growth and academic standards, the University Grants Commission (UGC) granted it deemed-to-be university status in 2007 under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956.
GITAM operates three campuses:
The university is organised into multiple schools and institutes covering engineering and technology, management, science, pharmacy, architecture, law, humanities and social sciences, and medicine. It offers programmes at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels, and conducts research across these disciplines.
GITAM is among the earlier private deemed universities in coastal Andhra Pradesh and has contributed to the development of technical and management education in the region. Its Visakhapatnam campus is one of the recognisable academic landmarks of the city, and the institution participates in national accreditation and ranking frameworks operated by bodies such as the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF).
