The institution functions as a combined medical college and attached teaching hospital. The college conducts undergraduate medical training leading to the MBBS degree, while the hospital provides outpatient, inpatient, emergency and specialty services to patients drawn largely from Patan district and the surrounding North Gujarat region. As with other GMERS colleges, admissions are made through the centralised counselling process based on the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).
The Gujarat Medical Education and Research Society was constituted by the Government of Gujarat to establish new medical colleges across the state on a self-sustaining model, addressing the shortage of medical seats and tertiary care facilities outside the major urban centres. Under this initiative, GMERS colleges were set up in towns such as Sola (Ahmedabad), Gandhinagar, Gotri (Vadodara), Valsad, Himmatnagar, Junagadh and Dharpur-Patan, among others. Each college is paired with a hospital that serves as its clinical training base.
The college and hospital are situated at Dharpur, on the outskirts of Patan, a historic town known for the Rani ki Vav stepwell, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The campus houses academic departments covering the pre-clinical, para-clinical and clinical subjects required for an MBBS programme, along with hostels, library and administrative facilities. The attached hospital provides services in core specialties including general medicine, general surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, anaesthesiology, radiology and pathology.
The college offers the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme, regulated by the National Medical Commission (formerly the Medical Council of India). It is affiliated for academic purposes to a Gujarat state university, in line with the affiliation pattern followed by GMERS colleges.
The establishment of the college expanded access to government-supported medical education in North Gujarat and added tertiary-level hospital capacity in Patan district, which had earlier relied largely on district-level health facilities and referrals to larger cities such as Ahmedabad and Mehsana.
