The institution traces its origins to engineering and management institutes founded by the GLA group of educational trusts in Mathura. These earlier institutes operated as affiliated colleges under universities in Uttar Pradesh before the constituent campuses were brought together as a unified university. The university derives its name from the founding trust associated with its establishment.
The campus is located at Chaumuhan on the Mathura–Delhi route, in proximity to the temple towns of Mathura and Vrindavan, which are significant centres of Hindu pilgrimage in the Braj region.
GLA University is organised into multiple institutes and departments offering programmes that include:
The university awards bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees, and conducts its own admission process for several programmes alongside accepting national-level entrance examinations.
The main campus houses academic blocks, laboratories, a central library, hostels for men and women, sports facilities, and a training and placement cell. The campus operates as a residential university for a substantial portion of its student body.
As one of the larger private universities in western Uttar Pradesh, GLA University contributes to higher education access in the Braj region, drawing students from across northern India. Its location on a major national highway corridor between Delhi and Agra places it within an area that has seen significant growth in private higher education since the early 2000s.
