Flurys was founded by Joseph and Frieda Flury, a Swiss couple who set up the establishment on Park Street in Kolkata (then Calcutta) during the early twentieth century. The shop introduced Swiss and continental confectionery traditions to the city, including pastries, cakes, chocolates and breakfast fare, and quickly became a fashionable meeting place for Calcutta's cosmopolitan clientele.
In later years the business came under the ownership of the Apeejay Surrendra Group, a Kolkata-based conglomerate with interests in hospitality, tea and shipping. Under this ownership, Flurys was renovated while retaining its art deco character, and the brand was extended through additional outlets in Kolkata and other Indian cities.
The shop is known for its breakfast spreads, English-style tea service, and a range of pastries, gateaux, puffs, sandwiches and chocolates. Items such as rum balls, plum cakes around Christmas, and assorted continental pastries are particularly associated with the establishment. The original Park Street tea room features period décor and large display counters that remain a defining feature of the brand.
Flurys is closely tied to the social history of Park Street, often cited alongside other long-standing Kolkata establishments as part of the street's identity as a dining and entertainment hub. It is frequently mentioned in writings on Calcutta's Anglo-Indian, European and Parsi heritage, and is considered an institution among the city's older confectioneries.
