Father Muller's Institute of Medical Education and Research is a private Catholic minority medical institution located in Mangaluru, in the coastal Karnataka region of India. It operates under the umbrella of Father Muller Charitable Institutions, a body rooted in the Catholic missionary tradition of the Dakshina Kannada district. The institution offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and super-speciality programmes in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and allied health sciences. It is affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Bengaluru, which is the principal affiliating university for health science colleges across Karnataka.
The institution is widely recognised in the Coastal Karnataka region for combining medical education with charitable healthcare delivery, continuing a tradition of mission-based hospital service that predates the formal establishment of the medical college.
The origins of Father Muller's Charitable Institutions trace back to the work of Father Augustus Muller, a German Jesuit missionary who established a charitable dispensary in Mangalore in the late nineteenth century to serve the poor and sick of the region. This dispensary gradually grew into a hospital, which became the foundation upon which later educational institutions were built.
Over the course of the twentieth century, the hospital expanded its scope and infrastructure significantly. The medical college was established to formalise and extend the educational mission of the institution, training doctors who would serve both within the institution and across the country. The nursing college and other allied health science programmes were added subsequently, broadening the institution's academic footprint.
The institution is administered by the Diocese of Mangalore and is run on a not-for-profit, charitable basis, with a stated emphasis on serving economically weaker sections of society alongside fee-paying patients and students.
Father Muller's Medical College offers the MBBS degree at the undergraduate level, affiliated to RGUHS. Postgraduate MD and MS programmes are offered across a range of clinical and pre-clinical specialities. The institution also houses a College of Nursing, a College of Pharmacy, and programmes in physiotherapy and other paramedical disciplines.
Super-speciality and fellowship programmes are conducted in select departments, supported by the attached teaching hospital. The academic calendar and examination schedules follow the norms set by RGUHS and the National Medical Commission (NMC), the apex regulatory body for medical education in India.
Father Muller's Charitable Hospital serves as the primary teaching hospital for the medical college. It is a multi-speciality hospital offering services across departments including general medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, orthopaedics, psychiatry, oncology, and several others. The hospital functions as both a tertiary care referral centre for the Coastal Karnataka region and as the principal site for clinical training of medical and nursing students.
A dedicated cancer centre and a psychiatric care unit are among the specialised facilities that distinguish the hospital's clinical profile. The institution also runs outreach health programmes and charitable clinics in surrounding rural and semi-urban areas, providing students with exposure to community medicine and primary healthcare settings.
The campus is situated in Deralakatte, on the outskirts of Mangaluru city. It encompasses the medical college building, the hospital complex, residential hostels for students and staff, a central library, simulation and skills laboratories, and sports and recreational facilities. The library maintains collections of medical journals, textbooks, and digital resources to support research and academic work.
Separate hostel accommodation is provided for male and female students. The campus has a chapel reflecting its Catholic institutional character, and cultural and religious observances form part of campus life.
Admission to the MBBS programme is governed by the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG), conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). Seat allocation follows the Karnataka state counselling process administered by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA), along with management and NRI quota seats as permitted under applicable regulations. Postgraduate admissions are conducted through NEET-PG.
The institution supports a range of student bodies including cultural associations, sports clubs, and discipline-specific academic societies. Annual cultural fests, inter-collegiate competitions, and community service initiatives are regular features of student life. The institution's Catholic ethos is reflected in pastoral care programmes and voluntary community outreach activities organised throughout the academic year.
