Fatehgarh is situated in the arid zone of western Rajasthan, characterised by sand dunes, scrub vegetation and low rainfall. The terrain around the town is typical of the Thar Desert, with sparse settlements and pastoral land use. It falls within the Jaisalmer district, which shares an international boundary with Pakistan to the west.
Administratively, Fatehgarh is part of the Jaisalmer district in the Jodhpur division of Rajasthan. Local civic and revenue functions come under the district administration headquartered at Jaisalmer city, while law and order is overseen through the Rajasthan Police.
The local economy is largely agrarian and pastoral, dependent on rain-fed cultivation, animal husbandry (notably sheep, goats and camels), and small-scale trade. As with much of Jaisalmer district, traditional handicrafts and remittances from those working in larger Rajasthani cities also contribute to household incomes.
Fatehgarh is connected by road to Jaisalmer city and other settlements in the district. The nearest major urban centre with broader rail and air connectivity is Jaisalmer, which has a railway station on the North Western Railway network and a civil airport.
