Fatehganj is one of the numerous small habitations that make up the rural landscape of Ayodhya district. Like other settlements in the district, it falls under the administrative framework of the Uttar Pradesh state government, with local governance carried out through the panchayati raj system at the village and block levels.
Ayodhya district, of which Fatehganj is a part, was reorganised and renamed from the earlier Faizabad district in 2018, when the Government of Uttar Pradesh formally renamed the district and the city. The district is administered by a District Magistrate, while law and order is overseen by a Senior Superintendent of Police. At the local level, the village comes under the relevant gram panchayat and development block of the district.
The settlement is situated in the central part of Uttar Pradesh, on the Gangetic plain that is drained by the Ghaghra (Saryu) river system. The terrain in this part of the Awadh region is generally flat and alluvial, supporting paddy, wheat, sugarcane and pulses as the principal crops.
The district headquarters at Ayodhya is the principal urban centre serving the surrounding settlements, and is linked to Lucknow, Gorakhpur and Varanasi by road and rail. Ayodhya Junction and Faizabad Junction are the main railway stations of the district, while the Maharishi Valmiki International Airport at Ayodhya provides air connectivity to the region.
The settlement derives its broader cultural and historical context from its location within Ayodhya district, a region of considerable religious and historical importance in Indian tradition, associated with the Ramayana and a pilgrimage centre for Hindus, as well as a site of significance for Jainism and Buddhism.
