Fahadh Faasil

Fahadh Faasil is an Indian actor and producer who works predominantly in Malayalam cinema. Known for his understated performance style and choice of unconventional scripts, he is regarded as one of the leading actors of his generation in Indian cinema. He is also a partner in the production house Fahadh Faasil and Friends (FFF).

Background

Fahadh was born in Alappuzha, Kerala, to filmmaker Fazil, who directed Malayalam classics such as Manichitrathazhu and Aniyathipraavu. He spent part of his early life in the Gulf and later studied in the United States, reportedly pursuing higher education in the field of media before returning to films.

Career

Early debut and setback

Fahadh made his acting debut in 2002 with Kaiyethum Doorath, directed by his father Fazil. The film failed at the box office and Fahadh stepped away from acting for several years.

Return and breakthrough

He returned to cinema with the anthology film Kerala Cafe (2009), appearing in the segment Mrityunjayam directed by Uday Ananthan. His performances in Pramani (2010) and Cocktail (2010) drew critical attention. The 2011 releases Chaappa Kurishu (directed by Sameer Thahir) and Akam (directed by Shalini Usha Nair) established him as a serious actor of the new wave of Malayalam cinema.

Established actor

Between 2012 and 2014, Fahadh delivered a string of acclaimed performances in films such as 22 Female Kottayam (2012, directed by Aashiq Abu), Annayum Rasoolum (2013, directed by Rajeev Ravi), Artist (2013, directed by Shyamaprasad), North 24 Kaatham (2013, directed by Anil Radhakrishnan Menon) and Bangalore Days (2014, directed by Anjali Menon). His performance in Artist earned him a Special Mention at the 60th National Film Awards.

Later work

Fahadh continued to work in widely discussed films including Maheshinte Prathikaaram (2016, directed by Dileesh Pothan), Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum (2017, also Pothan), Take Off (2017), Njan Prakashan (2018), Kumbalangi Nights (2019, directed by Madhu C. Narayanan), Trance (2020, directed by Anwar Rasheed), C U Soon (2020), Joji (2021, directed by Dileesh Pothan) and Malik (2021, directed by Mahesh Narayanan).

Pan-Indian projects

Fahadh expanded into Tamil and Telugu cinema, appearing in Velaikkaran (2017) in Tamil and as the antagonist Bhatia in the Telugu blockbuster Pushpa: The Rise (2021), directed by Sukumar, with the role continuing in subsequent instalments of the franchise. He also worked in the Tamil film Vikram (2022), directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj.

Fahadh co-founded Fahadh Faasil and Friends (FFF), through which he has backed films including Maheshinte Prathikaaram, Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum, Kumbalangi Nights and Joji. The banner is associated with director–writer collaborations involving Dileesh Pothan and Syam Pushkaran.

Personal life

Fahadh married actress Nazriya Nazim on 21 August 2014. The couple have appeared together in films such as Bangalore Days (2014) and Trance (2020).
