The group traces its origins to a packaging business established by Subhash Chandra. It expanded into flexible packaging through Essel Propack, which grew into one of the larger laminated tube manufacturers globally. The conglomerate subsequently diversified into broadcasting, infrastructure, amusement, and several allied sectors.
The group entered television broadcasting in 1992 with the launch of Zee TV, marking the beginning of private satellite television aimed at Indian audiences. The media business is anchored by Zee Entertainment Enterprises, which operates a portfolio of general entertainment, regional language, movie, and music channels distributed in India and internationally. Allied media ventures have included direct-to-home services through Dish TV and cable distribution through Siti Networks.
Essel Propack manufactures laminated and plastic tubes used in oral care, beauty, pharmaceutical, and food packaging, with operations across multiple countries.
The infrastructure arm has been involved in road construction, urban transit, solar power, and transmission projects across India.
The group has interests in education through Zee Learn and associated brands, amusement and theme parks, and precious metals retailing. It has also operated ventures in online lottery and technology services.
Essel Group is widely credited with shaping the private television industry in India. The launch of Zee TV in 1992 broke the state broadcaster's monopoly on Indian-language satellite television and contributed to the growth of cable and satellite distribution, regional language programming, and Indian content exports to diaspora markets. Its packaging business has had a notable presence in global laminated tube manufacturing.
