The original Escorts group was founded by brothers Hari Prasad Nanda and Yudi Nanda in the post-Independence period, beginning as a franchise and trading enterprise before moving into manufacturing. Over the decades, Escorts Limited evolved into one of India's well-known engineering houses, with a strong presence in farm mechanisation. The Nanda family, including Rajan Nanda and later Nikhil Nanda, played a significant role in the group's leadership.
Kubota Corporation, a Japanese manufacturer of agricultural and industrial machinery, had partnered with Escorts through a tractor manufacturing joint venture, Escorts Kubota India, to produce sub-compact and compact tractors for Indian and export markets. This partnership was deepened when Kubota acquired a controlling stake in Escorts Limited, leading to the renaming of the parent entity as Escorts Kubota Limited. The transition aligned the Indian operations with Kubota's global agricultural and engineering footprint.
The company's principal manufacturing facilities are located in Faridabad, with additional plants and ancillary units serving its different divisions. Escorts Kubota exports tractors and components to markets in Europe, North America, Africa, and South Asia. Research and development activities focus on emission-compliant engines, mechanised farming solutions for smallholders, and equipment tailored to Indian field conditions.
Escorts Kubota is regarded as a key contributor to India's farm mechanisation, particularly in the wheat- and paddy-growing belts of north India. Its role in supplying components to Indian Railways and metro projects also makes it an important domestic engineering supplier. The Kubota-led restructuring is considered a significant instance of Japanese industrial investment in the Indian engineering sector.
