Emami was founded in 1974 in Kolkata by two childhood friends, Radhe Shyam Agarwal and Radhe Shyam Goenka, who left their managerial positions at the Birla group to start their own venture. The company began by manufacturing cosmetics and ayurvedic products under the Emami brand, which steadily expanded into a wide portfolio of consumer goods rooted in traditional Indian formulations.
Emami Limited is the flagship FMCG company of the group. It markets several well-known brands across personal care and healthcare segments, including Navratna cooling oil, BoroPlus antiseptic cream, Zandu (acquired in 2008), Fair and Handsome, Kesh King, Mentho Plus balm, and Fast Relief. The company has manufacturing facilities at multiple locations in India and exports its products to numerous countries across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and elsewhere.
Emami is regarded as one of the prominent Indian FMCG companies with a strong base in ayurvedic and herbal-positioned products. It played a notable role in popularising category-defining products such as cooling hair oil (Navratna) and men's fairness cream (Fair and Handsome). The group is also among the major business houses based in Kolkata, contributing to industries spanning consumer goods, paper, edible oils, healthcare, and real estate in eastern India.
