It was conceived to provide the country with a self-reliant base in advanced electronics, at a time when much of the required technology had to be imported. From its inception, the corporation focused on areas where commercial firms were unwilling or unable to invest, including nuclear instrumentation, control and safety systems, and high-reliability electronics for strategic users.
Over the decades, ECIL has diversified across several electronics segments. Major business areas include:
ECIL has played a notable role in building India's domestic electronics manufacturing capability, particularly in fields where strategic considerations restrict access to imported technology. Its supply of control and instrumentation systems to nuclear power stations operated by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited and to facilities of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre has made it an integral part of the Indian nuclear ecosystem. Through its participation in the manufacture of EVMs, ECIL has also contributed to the conduct of general and state elections across India.
