Elecon was founded by Ishwarbhai B. Patel, an industrialist from the Charotar region of Gujarat. The name "Elecon" was derived from "Elevators and Conveyors", reflecting the company's early focus on bulk material handling systems. Over the decades, the firm diversified into the manufacture of high-precision industrial gears, and gear manufacturing later emerged as one of its principal businesses.
The company operates manufacturing facilities in Gujarat, with its principal plants located in and around Vallabh Vidyanagar.
