Elecon was founded by Ishwarbhai B. Patel, an industrialist from the Charotar region of Gujarat. The name "Elecon" was derived from "Elevators and Conveyors", reflecting the company's early focus on bulk material handling systems. Over the decades, the firm diversified into the manufacture of high-precision industrial gears, and gear manufacturing later emerged as one of its principal businesses.
The company operates manufacturing facilities in Gujarat, with its principal plants located in and around Vallabh Vidyanagar. It exports to a number of overseas markets and has had subsidiary or associate operations in Europe and the United States, including the acquisition of overseas gear-manufacturing assets to expand its global footprint.
Elecon's customer base spans cement plants, thermal and hydroelectric power stations, steel mills, sugar factories, fertiliser units, mining operations, and major ports. The company has been associated with supplies to large public sector undertakings in India, including projects of NTPC, SAIL, Coal India and various port trusts, as well as private-sector industrial groups.
Elecon is regarded as one of the pioneers of indigenous gear and material handling technology in India. Its growth paralleled the post-independence industrialisation of the country, in which domestic supply of heavy mechanical equipment was a strategic priority. The company is also a notable industrial employer in the Charotar belt of central Gujarat and is part of the wider business ecosystem associated with the Patel community of the region.
